Beyond Limits combines this data with human expertise and digitizes operational models to allow operators to plan, scale, and increase profitability,” said Clare Walker, Industry Principal. “Beyond Limits also enables companies to retain industry knowledge that would otherwise be lost when veteran engineers retire. It embeds their domain expertise into systems to make it available to junior engineers.”

While Beyond Limits has primarily worked within industrial settings, it recently entered the financial services sector. In 2020, it extended its presence to Asia-Pacific through three main segments: general administration, compliance and accounting, and transactional and new business issues. By minimizing manual labor, backlogs, false positives, and negative determinations, it enables its customers to drive revenue, comply with regulations, manage accounting operations, and process a continuous stream of financial transactions.

Significantly, Beyond Limits adopts a co-development approach to partnerships, wherein it gains access to partners’ financial subject matter expertise and tools such as smart investment platforms, chatbots, natural language processing, and optical character recognition. It then leverages its Cognitive AI engine to enhance solutions’ features and functionalities. As most of its customers require bespoke solutions, each deployment is unique.

New technology helps detect leaks in distribution networks using deep learning architecture and physics-based modeling

Beyond Limits, an industrial and enterprise-grade AI technology company built for the most demanding sectors, today announced it will be expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) offerings to include sensor placement technology. A standalone AI application for leak detection in utilities’ water distribution networks, the new product uses physics-based models and deep learning architectures to identify critical sensors, detect and locate leaks, and recommend optimal location of pressure sensors for improved operations and maintenance capabilities.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates water utilities lost roughly $2.6 billion each year as of 2016. Current losses are expected to be even higher due to aging infrastructure, sub-optimal sensor placement and ineffective maintenance, making water loss monitoring, prevention, and remediation among the top financial and operational priorities for utilities providers. Many global utilities however lack the knowledge and resources to address these challenges.

“The acceleration of digital transformation efforts in the industrial sector has led to an exponential increase in the number of sensors generating massive amounts of data,” said AJ Abdallat, CEO of Beyond Limits. “But this data is difficult to gather, manage, store and analyze. Beyond Limits’ new sensor selection application allows utilities providers to focus on the most valuable feedback data from their network, reducing the cost and complexity of intelligent systems while more effectively identifying which sensors are most valuable and immediately alerting users to anomalies like gas or water leaks or service disruptions.”

The technology also offers a range of applications for managing and optimizing utilities operations, from power plants and electrical grids, to refineries and manufacturing sites. Currently, Beyond Limits’ sensor framework has been licensed to The Carnrite Group for deployment, and will initially be implemented in a multi-million dollar agreement with Xcell Security House and Finance S.A. for the company’s cognitive power plan.

“We’re always looking for innovative ways to create value for our clients,” said Alan Carnrite, Founder & CEO of The Carnrite Group. “Beyond Limits’ sensor placement technologies will allow companies spanning the utilities, power and energy industries to operate more efficiently, optimally place sensors and more effectively detect leaks. This is a perfect example of a technology solution that not only makes business sense but helps advance environmental sustainability goals.”

Beyond Limits’ Cognitive AI applies human-like reasoning to solve problems, much like how humans form conclusions using inference and logic. This unique approach combines encoded human knowledge with available data sources, allowing systems to adapt and continue to operate in situations where data may be in short supply or missing altogether. As a result, Beyond Limits’ customers are able to elevate operational insights, improve operating conditions, enhance performance at every level, and ultimately increase profits as a result.

“bp ventures was established to identify and invest in high-potential, game-changing technology companies that can help us reimagine our global energy system,” said Morag Watson, Senior Vice President, Digital Science and Engineering at bp. “With this additional investment, we believe that Beyond Limits’ Cognitive AI could help create a more intelligent and sustainable future for the energy sector and indeed across industry as a whole.”

“We look forward to working together and exploring the many capabilities of this advanced technology,” said Martin Edelman, General Counsel, Group 42. “We believe Beyond Limits’ unique AI will bring new levels of efficiency to high-impact sectors and help drive future economic growth.”

The $133M funding will be used to expand Beyond Limits’ business both in the United States and abroad, including the launch of Beyond Limits Asia, with regional headquarters in Singapore and operations in Hong Kong, Taipei and Tokyo and further expansion across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The funding will also accelerate Beyond Limits’ Cognitive AI application development and SaaS product portfolio and fuel the Beyond Labs R&D program.
